"For the Church of the 21st century, good ecology is not an optional extra but a matter of justice. It is therefore central to what it means to be a Christian." ~ Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.

All Christians are called to be stewards of God's magnificent creation, and to live sustainably.
The fifth Mark of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion is ‘to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the earth’.

Social & Environmental Responsibility are inextricably intertwined.

The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world and all who live in it. Ps 24.1 (NIV)

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. Genesis 1:31 (NIV)

Environmental degradation is not simply a scientific or political issue. Greed and exploitation have accompanied and often overshadowed beneficial economic development. Unjust political and social structures have led to displacement of people and to poverty. Over-consumption of resources such as forest clearing or overgrazing has resulted as people struggle to survive. Transformation to wise and sustainable use of the environment is at heart a spiritual matter. Environmental concern is a legitimate and necessary part of a Christian's response to God's loving provision for us from GREEN BY GRACE - a report prepared for the general synod 2004 by the Environment Working Group of the Anglican Church of Australia.

ST HILARY'S ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY AND PRINCIPLES - Environmental Concerns

The following Environmental policy and principles were adopted at the September 2009 Church Council meeting:

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
St Hilary's is committed to show leadership in the way we care for the planet, and to use sparingly the resources over which God has given us stewardship.

Accordingly, we will strive to reduce our environmental impact both as members of the St Hilary's community and as individuals, and to positively influence the wider community, and policy makers, based on a consistent approach to mainstream environmental issues.

PRINCIPLES – we commit to the following principles

1. Understanding / Communication - to encourage a deep and objective understanding of and commitment to the environment amongst our congregations, through provision of education and training.

2. Environmental footprint - to take initiatives to minimize the current and future environmental impact of our activities on the land, air, water and other natural resources (energy use, water use, recycling, purchasing policy etc).

3. Environmentally accountable financial resource use - to ensure that in relation to short and long term capital planning decisions, and to ongoing purchase of goods and services, we take actions to identify and minimise the environmental impacts of such decisions.

4. Public Policy - to participate, where appropriate, in the formulation of sound public policy that meaningfully addresses environmental problems.

Refresh: Sexting, porn and other things you don't talk about at church

Our culture is becoming saturated with sex, nudity and relationships. Don't believe me? Count how many billboards use sex to sell their product, or TV commercials, or online ads. It's everywhere! The church has a reputation for never talking about this stuff cos it's shameful or something. It's a reputation we intend to smash at Wipeout by talking about it all night! Seriously though it's important stuff and God has some seriously brilliant advice in this area.

At Refresh we get together for a night of games, discussion, singing and some fantastic teaching. These nights are a great way of learning more about the God who's alive and active today. Start Time: 7:15Pickup Time: 9:30pmLocation: St Hilarys - 12 John St. KewCost: $2Bring: A bible and notepad if you're into taking notes/doodling.

Boring Christians

Let's face it. Church has a reputation for being boring. In many cases it is a well deservered reputation. Likewise Christians can also come across as boring. Again, it is sometimes a well deserved reptutation. So why would a young person bother taking an interest in Christianity? There are good reasons but you'll have to come to TGIF in order to find out (I have RSI from typing...)

Our Purpose Statement: "We aim to point people to Jesus, build lasting friendships, grow our faith, celebrate God with our whole lives, and get involved in God's work."

We have a strong community for people in year 10, 11 & 12 with several different ways to be involved. We are passionate about equipping young people to live lives of meaning, purpose and hope through a relationship with Jesus Christ. We have three key types of meeting.

Small Groups
With around 200 people attending the 7pm service it is important to not get lost in the crowd. Small Groups are... well... small groups of people who meet together in homes. Most of them meet on Sundays at 4:30 but in 2010 we will also have alternate meeting times. During Small Group we study the bible, pray and do life together under the guidance of young adult leaders from the 7pm community.

Thank God It's Friday

Every now and then we get together for some fun and teaching aimed specifically at senior high schoolers. They're not every week but when they're on these meetings are the place to be and a great place to invite friends as well.

Shac7 Services
We meet at 7pm in the hall at Genazzano College (Cotham Rd, Kew) every Sunday night. This service is targeted at secondary students and young adults. The service creatively presents relevant bible teaching, dynamic worship music and prayer for our church, community and world.

Our Purpose Statement: "We aim to point people to Jesus, build lasting friendships, grow our faith, celebrate God with our whole lives, and get involved in God's work."
Wipeout is a Christian community for youth in years 7-9. We have fun filled activities every Friday night of the school term. Wipeout is all about developing relationships. We aim to help youth develop friendships with each other, their leaders and of course God.

This is a vibrant service designed specifically for youth and young adults, and is run at Genazzano College, Cotham Rd, Kew.

The Shac@6 congregation is a unique blend of adults from their 20s to 80s, unified by their desire to grow in knowing and loving Jesus Christ the Lord in the reality of adult life. We are a congregation of about 80 people, which enables us to get to know each other and participate in deeper ways. All adults are welcome, from all backgrounds and life experiences. We are a growing and genuine bunch of people!

We have two wings to our community life - Sunday celebrations, where preaching from the Bible, music, prayer, spending time together are our priorities, and Small Groups, where we can do life together with other Christians and those seeking to find out more about God's love, word and plan for the world.

We are heavily involved in the life of the church and in our community - The Alpha Course, soup van ministry, missions, the Growing Leaders programme, and being the best we can be in our workplaces. We support social justice endeavours like Micah Challenge and Heal Africa. We love spending time together over dinner once a month after the service (usually the first Sunday), where all are welcome. Our Small Groups are always willing to grow - and you can join a group by contacting Peta and Jack Jane via email.

Our minister is the Rev'd Megan Curlis-Gibson, whose focus is to empower the entire congregation for service, and to ensure God's word is at the centre of all we do. She also has a special pastoral care mandate for the Young Adults in our congregation and runs the Growing Leaders course across Shac.

Shac@6 is a special place to be - worship is real, prayer is heartfelt, creativity is encouraged and the Bible is taken seriously. Come and join us on a Sunday night!

Last Sunday it was announced that Megan Curlis-Gibson will go on parenting leave in August 2010. The Rev'd Peter Corney will take over leadership of Shac@6 until the end of 2010, which is wonderful news. A task force has been convened to shape a planning process for the future of Shac@6 into 2011 and beyond. You can email Ashley Walker with your thoughts and vision for the community of Shac@6 - we want to hear from you!
